Monospecific cultures were grown in sterile filtered seawater enriched with 100 mM nitrate and 6.25 mM phosphate and with trace metals and vitamins. Incident photon flux density was 350 mmol/m2*s and a 16/8 hours light/dark cycle was applied. Cells were acclimated to experimental conditions for approximately 10 generations and CO2 levels were adjusted by adding calculated amounts of 1 M HCl.
